It is no longer developed.
Microsoft ended updates and removed it from the Microsoft Store. The final build shows a banner saying so.
Quick answer: Paint 3D is a free Microsoft app for Windows that mixes simple drawing, photo editing and beginner 3D. Microsoft has stopped developing it and removed it from the Microsoft Store, but it still works. The final build, 6.2410.13017.0, installs on Windows 11 and Windows 10 without the Store. This site has that file, the install steps, and a tested guide for every job.
Paint 3D Lab is an independent site. We are not Microsoft. We install Paint 3D ourselves, test every step on Windows 11, and tell you when something is missing or broken.
It is a Microsoft app that arrived with the Windows 10 Creators Update. It looks a little like classic Paint, but it adds a third dimension. You can draw a flat shape and puff it into 3D, drop in ready-made 3D models, cover them in textures, and mix everything with photos and text.
It was built for beginners, with no complex menus. Our tour of the app walks through the screen part by part.
This is the part most sites leave out.

Installed copies keep running, and the final build still installs. We use it on Windows 11 for every guide here.
You have to add it yourself.
Microsoft pointed people to 3D Viewer for 3D content, and 3D Viewer has since left the Store as well.
It now has layers, background removal and transparent PNG files, and it still gets updates.
The full story, told in order, is on our page about what happened to Paint 3D.
The final build is 6.2410.13017.0, the last version Microsoft ever released. It is the original Microsoft file, unmodified and signed by Microsoft Corporation. It needs Windows 11, or Windows 10 from Windows 10 version 1709.
Many download sites still hand out an older build. Ours is the last one Microsoft shipped, and you can check it against the original before you install. Get it from our download page.
Installing it takes two clicks with App Installer. If that fails, there is a one-line PowerShell route. Our install guide covers both, plus every install error code.
Each of these has its own step-by-step guide, tested in the app.
Magic select finds the object in a photo and lifts it off its background. You can then fix the edges by hand with Add and Remove.

See the 3D shapes guideThe 3D library still loads models from Microsoft's online service: animals, cars, characters and more.

Knowing the gaps saves you an hour of searching for a button that does not exist.
No layers.3D objects stay separate, but 2D work merges. See the layers question.
No curved text. There is a workaround, letter by letter. See how to curve text.
No blur.Photos on Windows 11 can blur a background instead. See how to blur.
No browser version. It only runs on Windows. See using it online.
No Mac version.See what Mac users can do.
No FBX, OBJ or STL export. It opens those files but saves 3D only as GLB or 3MF.
No updates.Any bug in the final build stays.
For 3D, yes. It is free, quick to learn, and nothing free on Windows replaced it directly. For simple 3D shapes, textured objects and turntable GIFs, it is still one of the easiest tools there is.
For flat photo edits, classic Paint is now the better choice. It has layers and one-click background removal, it is already on your PC, and it still gets updates. Our comparison of Paint vs Paint 3D goes feature by feature.
If you need more than either app offers, our list of free alternatives picks an app for each job.
Beginners in 3D.You can make a textured 3D object without learning a pro tool.
Students and teachers. It is free and simple to start with.
Anyone making quick visuals.A spinning product shot, a sticker on a photo, a cutout for a slide.
People who already know it.If it is part of how you work, the final build keeps it running.
It is not the right tool for detailed photo retouching, print design or professional 3D. The alternatives page covers those.
It opens common picture files such as PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF and TIFF. For 3D it opens 3MF, FBX, OBJ, STL, PLY and GLB files. It saves pictures as PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF or TIFF, videos as MP4 or GIF, and 3D models as GLB or 3MF. It also saves its own project format, which keeps your 3D objects editable. Projects go into the app's own storage rather than a folder you pick.
Every guide here starts in the app, not in another website's article.
We install the final build on Windows 11 and work through each task ourselves.
Every screenshot on this site comes from those tests.
Button names and error messages are checked against the text inside the app itself.
Version numbers, requirements and file formats come from Microsoft's own package, not from other download sites.
When a feature does not exist, we say so. When we could not test something, we say that too. If you spot a mistake, email [email protected] and we will check it in the app.
Repair keeps your data.Try it first when the app misbehaves.
Reset deletes it, including every project.Back up your projects before you ever press it.
Most problems have a safe fix. The key is the order: Repair keeps your data, Reset deletes it, including every project. Our troubleshooting guide takes you through the safe order and explains every error message the app shows.
Lost a project? It is probably not gone. The app keeps projects in a hidden folder, not in Documents. Our guide to where files are stored gives the exact path. Then follow the project recovery steps.
Yes. It has always been free, and so is the final build.
Not in the Microsoft Store. The final build still installs from a file. We run it on Windows 11, and the package supports Windows 10 from Windows 10 version 1709.
