Paint 3D System Requirements

Quick answer

Paint 3D needs Windows 10 version 1709 or later, including Windows 11. Its package includes versions for 64-bit, 32-bit and ARM PCs, and it needs two small Microsoft parts that it depends on. Microsoft never published RAM, processor or graphics figures, and the sites that quote exact numbers disagree with each other.

Most pages about Paint 3D system requirements copy numbers from each other. We went to the source instead. Every app package carries its own rules inside it, and Windows checks them before it installs anything. Here is what the final Paint 3D package says.

Which Windows versions it runs on

The package asks for Windows 10 version 1709 or newer. In build numbers, that is 10.0.16299.0.

  • Windows 11: yes. We installed it and used it on Windows 11 for every guide on this site.
  • Windows 10: yes, from Windows 10 version 1709 onward.
  • Windows 8.1 and Windows 7: no. The package is built for Windows 10 and later, and older Windows cannot install it.

To check your Windows version, press Windows + R, type winver and press Enter.

32-bit, 64-bit and ARM

The one download works on all three. The bundle holds a separate app for x64, x86 and ARM PCs, and Windows installs the one that fits your PC. You do not pick anything.

So the one download covers 32-bit Windows 10 too. There is no separate "32-bit download". We tested on 64-bit Windows 11 only.

To see which kind of PC you have, open Settings, then System, then About, and read System type.

We have not tested it on the newer ARM laptops that run Windows 11, so we make no promise about them.

The two parts it depends on

Paint 3D will not install unless two Microsoft parts are already on the PC:

  • Microsoft.UI.Xaml.2.0, which draws parts of the app's interface.
  • Microsoft.VCLibs.140.00, a standard set of files many Windows apps use.

Both are free Microsoft components, and many other Store apps use them too. The package lists both as required, so if Windows cannot find them, the install fails. Our guide on how to install Paint 3D shows how to tell and what to do.

Check whether you have them

Open PowerShell and run these two commands, one at a time:

PowerShell
Get-AppxPackage -Name Microsoft.UI.Xaml.2.0
Get-AppxPackage -Name Microsoft.VCLibs.140.00

If a command prints details such as a name and a version, that part is installed. If it prints nothing at all, that part is missing.

Internet connection

The 3D library needs an internet connection. It loads models from Microsoft's 3D content service. Without a connection, it shows this message:

There was a problem communicating with the 3D content service. Check your internet connection and try again later.

Our guide to the Paint 3D 3D library has more on what is in it.

RAM, processor and graphics

Microsoft never published official figures for these. Not for the final build, and not in the package. The download sites that list a minimum RAM or disk size do not agree with each other.

What we can tell you is practical:

  • It ran smoothly on our ordinary Windows 11 test PC.
  • The download itself is 64.4 MB.

If Paint 3D feels slow, open Menu, then Settings, and look at Adjust display quality. Normal is marked as the recommended setting, and on our PC it sat at the far left of the slider. If you moved it higher, move it back to Normal.

Display quality and smooth textures

One feature depends on that setting. Smooth texturing, which makes paint and stickers on 3D objects look softer, only works when display quality is set to High or Ultra. On a slower PC, stay on Normal and accept slightly rougher edges.

What it does not run on

  • Mac: no version exists. See Paint 3D for Mac.
  • A web browser: there is no online version. See Paint 3D online.
  • Windows Mixed Reality: the app itself says it is not supported there.
  • Phones and tablets without Windows: no version exists.

FAQ

Can Paint 3D run on Windows 7?

No. The package needs Windows 10 version 1709 or later. For a Windows 7 PC, see our list of Paint 3D alternatives.

Does Paint 3D work on 32-bit Windows 10?

The download includes a 32-bit version, and the package supports 32-bit Windows 10. We have tested it on 64-bit Windows 11 only.

How much RAM does Paint 3D need?

Microsoft never said. Any figure you see elsewhere is a guess.

Does Paint 3D need a graphics card?

Microsoft never published a graphics minimum. Paint 3D ran fine on our ordinary Windows 11 test PC.

Where do I get the right version?

There is only one final build, and it covers every supported PC. Get it from our Paint 3D download page.
