Can You Use Paint 3D Online?

On this page
Quick answer

No. There is no Paint 3D online, and there never was. Microsoft only ever made it for Windows PCs, and it has now stopped developing it. For 3D in a browser, use Tinkercad or SketchUp Free. For photo edits in a browser, Photopea is the closest thing to a full editor. All three are free.

People look for a browser version for good reasons. They are on a school Chromebook, an iPad or a work PC where they cannot install anything. Here is what is true, and what works instead.

Why there is no browser version

Paint 3D is a Windows app. Its package is built for Windows desktop PCs only, and it needs Windows 10 or later to install. Microsoft never released a web version, an Android version or an iPad version.

That will not change. Microsoft has removed Paint 3D from its Store and ended its updates, so no new version of any kind is coming. The full story is on our page about what happened to Paint 3D.

Watch out for look-alike sites

Some websites put the Paint 3D name on their own drawing tools. They are not Microsoft's app. Here is how to tell:

  • Microsoft's app does not run in a browser at all. Any site that opens a "Paint 3D" editor in a tab is something else.
  • Some ask you to download a file to "play" it. Be careful. Microsoft's real app only comes as a Windows app package, never as an EXE from a random site.
  • Look for Microsoft's name as the publisher. The real app shows Publisher: Microsoft Corporation when you install it.

If one of these tools does what you need, that is fine. Just know it is not Paint 3D.

Free 3D tools that run in a browser

These are the closest you can get to Paint 3D's 3D side without installing anything.

Tinkercad

Tinkercad is a free 3D design tool from Autodesk that runs in a web browser. You build models from simple shapes, much like Paint 3D's 3D shapes tab. It can export STL and OBJ files, which Paint 3D can open too.

It suits beginners and anyone making simple objects or things to 3D print.

SketchUp Free

SketchUp Free is the free, browser-based edition of SketchUp. It is built for rooms, furniture and buildings. It can export SKP, PNG and STL files. It also gives you access to 3D Warehouse, a large library of ready-made models, which fills the gap left by Paint 3D's old community site.

A free photo editor that runs in a browser

For the 2D jobs people used Paint 3D for, such as cutting out a background or adding text, try Photopea. It is free, paid for by ads, and it works in a browser tab. It has layers and masks, and it opens Photoshop PSD files. There is an optional paid plan that removes the ads.

On a Chromebook

Paint 3D cannot be installed on a Chromebook. Chromebooks do not run Windows apps.

The browser tools above run in Chrome, so they are the answer here.

On an iPad

There is no Paint 3D for iPad, and there never was. The browser tools above open in Safari, but they work best with a mouse and keyboard. On an iPad, a drawing or 3D app from the App Store is usually the easier choice.

On a Windows PC you cannot install apps on

If you are on a Windows PC but not allowed to install apps, Paint 3D is not an option. It needs to be installed. Classic Paint may already be there, though. It now has layers and background removal. Our comparison of Paint vs Paint 3D shows what it can do.

If you do have a Windows PC

Then you can still get the real thing. The final build installs without the Microsoft Store, in a couple of clicks. Get it from our Paint 3D download page.
