Paint 3D Transparent Background, Step by Step

On this page
Quick answer

Open the Canvas tab and switch Transparent canvas on. Then delete or erase what you do not want. Save with Menu, Save as, Image, and pick PNG. If Paint 3D shows its save screen, keep Transparency ticked.

A Paint 3D transparent background takes three settings, and missing any one of them gives you a white box. We tested each step on Windows 11 with a real photo. Here is what works.

Step 1: Turn on Transparent canvas

  1. Click the Canvas tab in the top bar.
  2. Switch Transparent canvas to On.

Don't look for a checkerboard pattern. Paint 3D shows a transparent canvas as see-through, so you see the gray workspace behind it instead. That gray is your transparency.

One thing surprises most people. If you opened a photo, nothing changes when you switch this on. We tried it. The photo covers the whole canvas, so there is no empty space to show through. The setting only affects parts of the canvas that are empty. So next you have to make some parts empty.

Step 2: Make parts of the picture see-through

Keep Transparent canvas on for this step. There are three ways to do it.

Delete a box-shaped area

  1. Click Select in the second bar.
  2. Drag a box over the area you want gone.
  3. Press Delete.

In our test, the deleted corner showed the same gray as the workspace. That means it is now see-through.

Erase by hand

  1. Click Brushes in the top bar.
  2. Pick the Eraser in the right panel.
  3. Set the Thickness slider, then paint over what you want to remove.

The erased line showed the workspace gray, not white. The eraser works best for small clean-ups around the edges.

Cut out a shape

For a person, a product or a logo, a box and an eraser are too rough. Use Magic select instead. It cuts the object out of its background for you. Our guide on how to remove a background in Paint 3D walks through it with a real photo.

Step 3: Save it as a PNG

  1. Click Menu, then Save as, then Image.
  2. If Paint 3D shows its own save screen, choose PNG in the Save as type list and check that Transparency is ticked. The preview shows see-through areas as a checkerboard. Click Save.
  3. In the Windows Save As window, keep the type on 2D - PNG (*.png), pick a folder and a name, and click Save.

In our tests, a scene with a 3D model opened Paint 3D's save screen first. An edited photo went straight to the Windows Save As window, already set to PNG. Both kept the transparency. When we reopened the saved photo, the deleted corner was still see-through.

Paint 3D image export screen with PNG selected and Transparency ticked

The option is called Transparency. Some guides call it "Transparent background", which is not a label you will find in the app.

Pick PNG, not JPEG. A JPEG file cannot store transparency at all. Our guide on how to save in Paint 3D covers every format the app offers.

A 3D model with no background

This is the easiest case, because there is no photo to clean up.

  1. Start with Menu, then New.
  2. Switch Transparent canvas on in the Canvas tab.
  3. Add your model from 3D shapes or the 3D library.
  4. Turn it to the angle you want.
  5. Save as a PNG with Transparency ticked.

In our test, the save preview showed the checkerboard all around the model. The result is a flat picture of the model with nothing behind it. It works well for slides, thumbnails and product mockups. Our guide to the Paint 3D 3D library shows where the ready-made models are.

Keep an editable copy

A PNG is flat. Once saved, you cannot move the parts around again. So save a project first with Menu, Save as, Paint 3D project. Then save the PNG. If you spot a mistake later, open the project, fix it and save a new PNG.

Why the background came out white

Almost every failed attempt comes down to one of four things:

  • Transparent canvas was off when you deleted or erased. Switch it on and do that step again.
  • You saved a JPEG. Save again and pick PNG.
  • Transparency was not ticked on Paint 3D's save screen. The preview shows no checkerboard when this is the problem.
  • Show canvas was switched off. This does not give a transparent image. It grays out Transparent canvas, and the save preview shows the gray workspace behind everything, with Transparency unticked. Switch Show canvas back on.

There is also a trap that is not your fault. Some apps show see-through areas as white or black. If the preview had a checkerboard, open the PNG in a different app before you decide it failed.

Making a logo transparent

A logo on a plain white background is the most common job. Paint 3D has no tool that turns one color see-through in a single click. So use one of these:

  • Magic select, for a logo with a clear edge. It cuts the logo away from the white.
  • Select and Delete, for a logo with straight edges and white space around it.
  • Eraser, for the last small bits along the edges.

Then save as a PNG with Transparency ticked, as in Step 3.

Is there an easier app for this?

On Windows 11, classic Paint now has a Remove background button and saves transparent PNG files too. Microsoft still updates Paint, while Paint 3D gets no updates at all. Our comparison of Paint vs Paint 3D shows which one suits which job.

FAQ

Why is there no checkerboard on my canvas?

That is normal. Paint 3D shows a transparent canvas as see-through, with the gray workspace behind it. The checkerboard only appears in the save preview.

Why didn't my photo turn transparent?

The setting only affects empty parts of the canvas. A photo fills the canvas, so you need to delete, erase or cut out the parts you want gone.

Which format keeps a transparent background?

PNG. Choose it in the Save as type list and keep Transparency ticked. JPEG never keeps transparency.

Can I make just one color transparent?

No. There is no color-to-transparent tool in Paint 3D. Use Magic select, or delete and erase the area by hand.

Does turning off Show canvas make the background transparent?

No. In our test, it grayed out Transparent canvas, and the save preview showed the gray workspace behind the model. Keep Show canvas on and switch Transparent canvas on instead.

Does the eraser make things transparent?

Yes, when Transparent canvas is on. In our test, the erased stroke showed the workspace behind the canvas.
