How to Invert Colors in Paint 3D

On this page
Quick answer

Paint 3D cannot invert colors. There is no invert option in any tab or menu. Classic Paint can, and it is already on your Windows PC. Open the picture in Paint, press Ctrl + A, right-click, and choose Invert color. Then save it, and reopen it in Paint 3D if you want to keep working there.

We went through every panel and every interface label in the app. Nothing inverts colors. So the practical answer to how to invert colors in Paint 3D is to borrow the step from Paint, which takes under a minute.

What the app offers instead

The Effects tab looks like the right place, but it only holds color filters and a Light wheel. The filters tint the whole scene, and the Light wheel adjusts the lighting. Neither one swaps colors for their opposites.

There is no negative, invert or reverse colors setting in the Canvas tab or the selection panels either.

Step 1: Open the picture in Paint

Save your picture first if it is still open. Use Menu, then Save as, then Image, and pick PNG. Our guide on how to save in Paint 3D explains each format.

Then find the file in File Explorer, right-click it, and choose Edit with Paint. You can also open Paint from the Start menu and open the file from there.

Note that the entry says Paint. Microsoft removed the old Paint 3D entry from this menu.

Step 2: Select what you want to invert

Press Ctrl + A to select the whole picture.

To invert only part of it, use Paint's selection tool and drag a box around that area instead.

Step 3: Invert the colors

Right-click inside the selection and choose Invert color. It is the last item in the menu. White turns black, black turns white, and every other color flips to its opposite.

The keyboard shortcut is quicker. Press Ctrl + Shift + I while the area is selected.

Be careful not to pick Invert selection. That option sits higher up in the same menu, but it does something different. It swaps which part of the picture is selected and leaves the colors alone.

Step 4: Save and go back

Save the picture in Paint. To keep editing in the 3D app, open it there with Menu, then Open, then Browse files. The inverted colors stay, because they are now part of the picture.

Why there is no invert option

Paint 3D was built around simple drawing and light 3D work, and it never had an invert tool. Microsoft has stopped updating it, so one will not be added. Our page on what happened to Paint 3D tells the full story.

Classic Paint is where Microsoft keeps adding image tools, and small edits like this are often quicker there now. Our comparison of Paint vs Paint 3D shows where each one is stronger. For bigger jobs, see our list of Paint 3D alternatives.

Common uses for inverted colors

  • Turn dark text on white into white text on black. Handy for logos and signs.
  • Make a negative look. Inverting a photo gives it the look of an old film negative.
  • Check contrast. Flipping colors can make faint lines and marks easier to spot.

If you later want part of the result on a see-through background, our guide to a transparent background in Paint 3D covers it.
